The grape variety choices are based on our initial premise, which has always been to plant what we wanted to drink. Let's just say that our journey as professionals in the art of imbibing offers us the chance to taste and drink wonderfully executed wines with a vivacity that leaves no one indifferent.
Planting grape varieties that are not perfectly suited to Quebec's northern climate presents its own set of challenges. We are not the only ones to have done so, and increasingly, Quebec winemakers are sharing all the steps and challenges that Vitis vinifera requires to produce grapes.
Questions have been swirling in our minds since the beginning of Sœurs Racines. From an agricultural perspective, planting hybrid vines would have been less complex and, above all, more generous. Vitis vinifera requires more work, is more prone to disease, and less vigorous; however, the grapes speak for themselves and require fewer interventions in the cellar. The acidity levels are lower, which makes us want to drink another, and then yet another bottle.
For us, that alone is a success. Because wine is about gathering around a bottle and experiencing pleasure, and pleasure is sipped one swallow at a time.
